2017 Pre-Orientation Programs

Get an early start on your Syracuse University experience by participating in a pre-orientation program. These programs enable you to make connections early, get familiar with our campus and community and have fun. Space is limited, so sign up early.

A note for international students - your international student orientation takes priority over the programs in pre-orientation schedule. Please visit the international student orientation page to register.

Access 'Cuse

Sponsored by the Office of Disability Services

Cost: $50

Do you plan to access testing, classroom or other disability related accommodations while attending SU? You’re invited to attend Access `Cuse, providing you with an opportunity to move-in early in order to address your transitional concerns as a student with disability, learn about our resources and how to access testing and classroom accommodations. You will have priority in making your appointment with your assigned counselor and to sign-up for worksops. Evening welcome, breakfast, and lunch is included for students and guests.

Build Your First-Year Experience

Sponsored by Hendricks Chapel

Cost: $225

Come to SU early and join other first-year and transfer students as you work with a variety of not-for-profit organizations in the City of Syracuse. Build friendships as you spend three days working to improve the community of Syracuse and have an opportunity to move in Sunday to your assigned room for the academic year. Cost includes meals and transportation during the three day program.

Will you be commuting to campus every day? This program is geared to first year students who will be commuting to campus. Come to this one day session and learn how to make the most of your time here. We will be participating in a low and high ropes challenge course in the afternoon. We’ll also give you the inside scoop on how to get involved on campus, where the best places are to hang out between classes and give you a chance to meet other first year students.

Hillel at Syracuse University is proud to offer the Slutzker Family FreshFest, a 36-hour pre-orientation program for all incoming students. FreshFest is an amazing opportunity for incoming students to move in early, participate in a Tzedek (social justice) project, and get off campus for fun social activities. Participants will get better acquainted with life at SU with the help of a strong group of specially selected, knowledgeable peer facilitators that run the program and the Hillel staff. LOOP: Adirondack Adventure

The Syracuse University Leadership Outdoor Orientation Program (LOOP) is designed to give incoming first-year students a jump-start on their college experience while engaging in outdoor adventure activities. This program provides an opportunity to move-in early and then go off-campus on a shared adventure with fellow students. During the trip you will experience the thrills of whitewater rafting, a low and high element challenge course, hiking, flat-water kayaking and canoeing, as well as campfires, starry night hikes and friendship, all in the serene setting of the Oswegatchie Educational Center, located within the majestic Adirondack Park region of New York.

Join your classmates on an adventure that will be sure to kick your first year into high gear! During this program you'll develop your skills on our outdoor "Odyssey" style challenge course. During the program you will not only get an opportunity to experience all the high element challenge course has to offer but you will also "learn the ropes" so to speak, as we teach you the basics of challenge course facilitation as you develop skills that will help you on your journey through college such as; positive relationship and trust building, effective communication, resiliency and determination, as well as the ability to think through and solve problems; not as an individual, but as a contributing member of a team and larger community.

SOULscape: A First-Year Wellness Retreat

SOULscape gives incoming first-year students the chance to enhance self-awareness and form new friendships through in-depth conversations about life's big questions! Syracuse University's Minnowbrook Conference Center, located in the Adirondack Mountains, provides the perfect backdrop to explore topics like purpose, gratitude, and vulnerability. Throughout the weekend, students will have opportunities to practice meditation and yoga, as well as explore nature and take time to self-reflect before immersing themselves in their Syracuse University experience.

Transfer Transitions

Transitioning Military Veterans to University Life

Sponsored by the Office of Veteran & Military Affairs and the Office of Engagement Programs

Dates: August 20-21
Cost: No fee

This pre-orientation program is open to all first-year and transfer military veteran students. Students and their families will enjoy an introduction to the Syracuse University campus and engage in conversation over dinner. A full day orientation will be held the following day focused on advising, housing, work study opportunities, child care, tutoring, veteran resources, and services Hendricks Chapel provides. Every student that attends this orientation program will have the opportunity to be paired with an on-campus mentor that will help them learn about all the opportunities the campus offers.
